The 2012 Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival was a fabulous 15th Anniversary celebration, featuring world class musicians and world premiere works.
Vivaldi’s Concerto in B minor for Four Violins and String Orchestra was a grand opening indeed, performed by a stage filled with amazing musicians. Opening night also heralded a world premiere work by Composer-in-Residence Jake Heggie. “Orcas Island Ferry” was composed for Artistic Director Aloysia Friedmann, violin/viola and Artistic Advisor Jon Kimura Parker, piano. A second world premiere work by Heggie, “This is My Beloved,” was beautifully performed by opera star Rod Gilfry, baritone; Andrés Cárdenes, violin; Anne Martindale Williams, cello; and Jake Heggie, piano. We were honored to welcome world famous mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade to the Festival and her very entertaining musical autobiographical concert. The always popular Miró Quartet were our Musicians-in-Residence this summer, performing concerts on the main stage, as well as community concerts throughout the island and a first-ever concert on Lopez Island. And we celebrated our 15th Anniversary with a crowd-pleasing free outdoor concert for the community of Orcas Island.
