Russian Tableaux – on Lopez!

Break out the caviar! Russian romantics Arensky and Rachmaninoff bookend opening night, in a program featuring Jon Kimura Parker and Viktor Valkov on two pianos, musical highlights from Carmen, and a virtuoso turn on the saxophone.  2015 Grammy award-winning saxophonist Timothy McAllister, and Orcas Island’s Oliver Aldort, cellist and the youngest member of the Boston Symphony, make their festival debuts in a program also featuring Aloysia Friedmann, Desmond Hoebig, Sandy Yamamoto, and Lachezar Kostov performing Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2!

Acclaimed conductor James Paul leads William Walton’s brilliant and witty Façade – An Entertainment featuring Adam Stern, Lorna McGhee, Owen Kotler, Timothy McAllister, Charlie Porter, Paul Hansen, Lachezar Kostov and Oliver Aldort. Our program opens with Mozart’s Piano Quartet in E-flat Major, which has dazzling piano cadenzas in the finale, and also presents Gershwin’s famous Three Preludes arranged for saxophone and piano!

The Children’s Concert this year features “The Story of Babar.”  Francis Poulenc set this wonderful children’s story to music for narrator and piano.  It will be performed by music educator Rachel Buchman and pianist Viktor Valkov.  This concert is free, with a courtesy ticket required.

Venture into the “woods” with eight cellos onstage, in an outpouring of Brazilian passion! We also present an early woodwind masterpiece, Mozart’s Oboe Quartet featuring oboist Nathan Hughes, who’s also performing the beautiful song, Morgen by Strauss with Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir. Finally we’ll take you deep into the forest for the lushly post-romantic Transfigured Night by Schönberg. A Beethoven Sonata and Intermezzi of Brahms round out this extraordinary program. Fiber artist Geoff Shilling creates a magical backdrop for the entire concert.
