The Bow Makers A Film V2

The Bowmakers – A Film

Published December 30, 2020

Held over!

Purchase Tickets

Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival’s presentation of the Island Premiere of the fascinating, heart-warming, and entertaining film The Bowmakers, has been held over for viewing through January 31st! Tickets are $15 to watch any time during these dates. OICMF is pleased to present this film in cooperation with the Orcas Island Film Festival.

The Bowmakers is a feature-length documentary that explores the world of stringed instrument bows and the extraordinary masters who make them. As the filmmakers describe it:

“The film follows the journey of the ‘silent servant’ of the music world—from the workshops of the virtuosos of the trade, to the birthplace of the bow in France, and to Brazil, home to the imperiled tree from which the world’s finest bows are made.

“The Bowmakers is an artful exploration of one of the most esoteric corners of the music world—as unknown to the public as it is essential to professional musicians.”

Many of these modern-day masters are our neighbors in Port Townsend, Washington! The Miró Quartet plays a significant role as well, as you will see from watching the trailer.

On Sunday, January 24, OICMF Artistic Director Aloysia Friedmann hosted a Zoom webinar with filmmaker Ward Serrill, bowmaker Ole Kanestrom, and Miró Quartet violinist William Fedkenheuer. Having Will and Aloysia talking bows, especially with this master craftsman, made for a fascinating event! The link to watch a recording of the webinar can be found under the Q&A tab on the ticket purchase page.

OICMF thanks event sponsors OrcaSong Farm and Carol Marcin and Tom Burg for underwriting our presentation of this beautiful film, and we also thank the Orcas Island Film Festival for sharing the event with their audience.
